Meanwhile, a parallel scene has developed. In getting bigger, these units have at least partially sacrificed the portability that, on paper, is one of digital DJing’s great promises. Since then, in search of better “feel”, and also to try to escape the “toy” appearance of many of these devices, DJ controllers have slowly got bigger and heavier (witness the latest batch – the jumbo and, the not-much-smaller, the, plus of course the daddy of them all, the humongous ). Over time they got better and better until the performance of the best of them pretty much matched vinyl, with convincing spinbacks, nudging, cueing and scratching all possible from their tiny little platters. To some it was great – the feel of vinyl with digital music! To others, it was the worst of both worlds – none of the simplicity of playing real vinyl, yet you still needed all the old equipment for it to work at all. So, back close to the advent of digital, digital vinyl systems (DVS) appeared, to let DJs use “real” record decks to control digital files. It’s something that’s proved hard to get away from. Yet that’s what DJs have always done – spin things that are round. The truth is, digital music files are not like records – they’re not round, and they don’t spin. Since the advent of digital DJing, DJs have faced a bit of a dilemma. So we’re in a great position to answer the question: After all the hype, is this diminutive little controller the way forward, or a brave failure? Let’s find out… We’ve devoured the manual, tested the features, and played a real-life gig using it. We’ve had a Novation Twitch for review for a week now. Wow! It’s going to be interesting to see if Novation will release a true 4 deck version of Twitch.Ever had the thought that jogwheels are a bit unnecessary when DJing with digital music? Or dreamt of a controller that replaced them with functions more suited to digital DJing? Looked at technogeeks with their custom controllers and wanted in on the action? If so, the new Novation Twitch DJ controller may be right up your street. Novation created a game changer when it dropped Twitch – The Touchstrip Controller on the market with a retail price of only $499 USD. There are so many tight features on this baby. And I’m sure all the gear nutz will figure out how to make it rock solid with Traktor.īut Twitch was hands down made for Serato Itch. There are some quirks to deal with when using in Traktor mode, but just having the ability to rock this baby with Traktor is great. Although in Traktor mode, having its own Filter control knob is nice. We also experience some latency issues when using it with Traktor. But all that functionality jammed into a 2 channel controller just seems like overkill. Novation helps by providing a Traktor Overlay (skin), so that you know exactly where everything is located. Although it is slick, when using it with Traktor once you get use to where everything is located. You can also use Twitch with Traktor and Ableton, but we weren’t wowed with the Traktor setup. It’s bundled with Serato Itch, which is the perfect marriage. It’s small and light enough to throw in a backpack when gigging and is USB powered with LED backlit buttons. Touchstrip replaces the platters, making this baby a compact, well built, and really DJ-friendly controller. What! No platters? Nope, that’s why it’s called The Touchstrip Controller. Novation changed that with the release of Twitch – The Touchstrip Controller. One thing’s for certain, we have always had something round to play with when DJing, but not any more. DJs! We are so use to doing and having things a certain way: battle or club style turntable setup, Pioneer or Denon CDJ’s, Numark NS6 or Pioneer DDJ-T1 controller.
